Grünwalder Strasse, Munich - Struggling FC Ingolstadt 04 appointed former FSV Frankfurt and Leipzig coach Tomas Oral last week to help turn the club's fortunes around. Oral could make an immediate impression on Friday evening when his new charges take on local rivals TSV 1860 Munich at the Audi Sport Park.

With Ingolstadt currently propping up the 2nd Bundesliga table in 18th place there is much work to do if the new manager is just to avoid relegation this season. "Die Schanzer" have only managed 2 wins so far this season and found themselves on the losing side 9 times in 14 games despite only 1 loss at home.

1860 are currently 10 points ahead of their hosts on Friday in 8th place, a position that does flatter them somewhat. The Lions were boosted by some good news this week after a deal secured with Hoffenheim that will allow scorer Kevin Volland to remain a Lion until the end of the season. Having had just 1 win in their last 6 matches Volland's extended stay in Munich is a welcome relief for Reiner Maurer who can continue to draw upon his goal scoring threat.

"Unfortunately we're not playing as well as we did early season," admitted 1860's head coach. "We have to start winning again because don't want to fall further down the table, we want to be back in 6th place but the team must become more stable for that to happen."

Both sides desperately need 3 points and for 1860 they could get drawn deeper down into the slump they are going through if they cannot find some form. If Ingolstadt suffer a losing start it could demoralise the players before their new coach gets an opportunity to raise their spirits. However, teams that employ a new head coach usually do well with players eager to impress their new boss and American striker Edson Buddle is one of those players hoping to put in a solid performance on Friday. Buddle scored in the US Men's National Team's friendly earlier in the week against Slovenia and will try to keep up his form against the Lions.

With the 3rd place playoff position a distant memory for 1860, the final game of the season was not one with a great deal riding on it, other than pride. As such, Alexander Schmidt's team selection today was certainly an unprecedented one. After weeks of consistent team selections, today's line-up saw wholesale changes with Schindler, Wood and Bundesliga debutant Kodjovi Koussou all given a starting berth. Schmidt's decision must come as a reaction to the poor display at Paderborn last weekend in which his men never got out of second gear and slumped to an embarrassing 2-0 defeat.

I think it's fair to say that 1860 have not been the team making the headlines in Munich over the past few weeks. Bayern's exceptional dismantling of Barcelona's tiki-taka style of football in the Champions League has created an incredible buzz around the city and there was clearly still some excitement loitering in the Allianz Arena for 1860's match against Union Berlin.

Ismaik leaves 1860 on the brink

TSV 1860 München investor Hasan Ismaik has followed through with his threat to pull the plug on his financial loan to the club. Without his support, the traditional and historical club is on the verge of bankruptcy.

Ismaik is quoted as saying that he "was left with no other choice." It will be a particularly disappointing piece of news for 1860 fans. Despite dreams of a top-flight return this season fading with their inconsistency, there was a belief that it wouldn't take too long before they were back to domestic derbies against the mighty Bayern Munich.

As the clock struck 18:00 across Germany, millions of people were heading home with smiles on their faces, exuding happiness at the prospect of a 4-day weekend over the Easter period. 1860 München fans were probably biting their nails though, as their team kicked off away against Erzgebirge Aue. After what seemed just another week of typically turbulent tantrums at TSV 1860 München, the club returned to duties on the pitch with a Friday evening trip to SV Sandhausen. 1860 could have gone into this match with a lot of confidence having finally ending their terrible run of home form by destroying Union Berlin last weekend. After the dazzling, midweek sunshine it felt as if the unusually long winter was finally over and that summer had arrived. Unfortunately, it didn't last and Munich was yet again plunged into cold, blustery conditions as 1860 München entertained FSV Frankfurt at the Allianz Arena. With Bayern Munich finally securing their status as football champions of Germany it is safe to say that Munich was painted red yesterday. However, in the blue half of the city things are a lot more precariously balanced. After a great set of results last week, 1860 sat in 6th position with the opportunity of reaching the play-off place still faintly in their grasp. TSV München von 1860 came into this game knowing that realistically they needed a win to remain in competition for third place and a shot at promotion. With the sun beating down on Munich from a cloudless sky I made my way with 24,000 others to the Allianz Arena. Fans of both 1860 and Ingolstadt were in a jovial mood with the underground packed and bouncing as a result of the dancing fans who were singing at the tops of their voices.
