Last second shot ruins Bayern comeback

ratiopharm arena, Ulm - Keaton Nankivil hit a three-pointer with 1.9 seconds on the clock as ratiopharm ulm defeated FC Bayern Basketball 76-75 in a Beko BBL Bavarian showdown.  Nankivil's game-winner came at the end of a pulsating game that had seven ties or lead changes in the final quarter.

After Jonathan Wallace hit a pair of free-throws seconds earlier to give Munich their final lead 75-73, Tommy Mason-Griffin made an errant inbounds pass that Chevon Troutman almost stole for Bayern.  He was able to deflect it, however Steven Michael Esterkamp recovered possession, passed it over to Nankivil who heaved the prayer from beyond the arc. (Watch the final play here.)  Bayern's final attempt at the buzzer fell short of the target and 6,000 fans packed in the arena were able to celebrate the win.

Mason-Griffin who led Ulm with 19 points described the scene during the timeout before the final shot. "Coach (Thorsten Leibenath) said we are going to win this game.  We are going to execute this play.  I tried to make a difficult pass that wasn't in what coach drew up," admitted Mason-Griffin.  "Steve (Michael Esterkamp) came up with the ball and got it to Keaton.  He hit a big time shot."

"I told Steve, with the time we have, we wanted to get a shot, that's all we were looking for," said Nankivil who finished with 12 points, all from three-point land.  "Anyone could have taken it and would have made it."

In the early going, Ulm were shooting the lights out in their new arena, hitting three-pointers from all over the court.  Esterkamp got the party started, hitting his only three shots to give the home side an early 11 point lead 15-4 in the first quarter.  He may have disappeared till the final play, but his teammates did not.  Nankivil hit his first trey at the end of quarter and Ulm led 23-16.

Munich started ice cold, only hitting 7 of their first 20 shots, but were able to keep close in the first half thanks to Wallace's 11 points and Jared Homan's 12 points.  However, each time Bayern came close, Ulm had an answer.  Isaiah Swann drill two 3-pointers at the beginning of the second quarter, Nankivil's trey gave the home side their biggest lead of 13 points at 34-21, and they went into halftime up 44-34.

Straight out of the break, Bayern went on a run to get the game to 46-43, but then Mason-Griffin took over.  He went on a personal 8-0 run to extend the lead, outscoring everyone during the next two minutes.  And he finished off his explosive quarter by nailing another three-pointer, Ulm led 62-54.  But before the end of the third quarter, Munich's captain Steffen Hamann hit a trey.

Bayern continued their mini-run as Aleksandar Nadjfeji started off the fourth quarter with a dunk and Wallace hit a shot from downtown.  And just like that, the game was tied at 62 with 8:23 left.

Minutes later, an impressive block by Homan started a break and former Ulmer Robin Benzing hit a three-pointer, giving Bayern their first lead since going up 2-0 seconds into the game.  The visitors had temporarily taken the air out of the new arena, leading 67-65 with 6:08 left.

"They came back, they made a run and started making shots," said Mason-Griffin.  "We didn't execute like we did at the beginning and that's how they got back in the game."

Ulm would not back down, not with their three-point capabilities.  Per Günther and Roderick Trice answered with long-range shots, and the momentum swung back to the hosts, 71-67 with 4:17 left.  The arena was now jumping, sensing the end of Bayern and a home win.  Normally, that would be the end for a road team, but this derby was not over.

Wallace would hit a three to tie it, then Mason-Griffin and Wallace traded buckets for the final tie at 73-73 with :30 seconds left.  Ulm would work the clock down but Mason-Griffin would miss with :09 seconds left, and would set up Wallace's free throws and the final dramatic shot.

Ulm finished 14-for-29 from 3-point land, building the lead with the shot, holding off Bayern's runs, and finally winning with the money ball.

"They shot exceptionally well today," said Wallace who led all scorers with 26 points, shooting not so bad himself, 6-for-7 from beyond the arc.  "We just stayed with our defensive focus for the game, tried to make some plays down the stretch and hopefully pull it out at the end.  Chevy got a deflection, the guy just made a tough shot."

"We battled, we regrouped after a poor first quarter," said Bayern head coach Dirk Bauermann.  "It's unfortunate that we didn't win, I thought we deserved to win.  We have to regroup and come back strong.  And we will."

Bayern continue their road through Bavaria, traveling to Stechert Arena in Bamberg to play defending league champs Brose Baskets on Saturday.  And facing a must-win situation if they are to have a chance to play in the Beko BBL Cup.  The top six teams will play during this in-season mini-tournament.  Bayern are now 8th in the table, tied with three other teams above them in the standings at 9-7.

"Bamberg is a solid team and they are very good but no one is unbeatable and in 40 minutes, anything is possible," added Bauermann about the upcoming Bavarian derby match.

Tip-off on Saturday is at 20:05 CET and will be broadcast live on sport1.

FC Bayern: Same name, different game

Bayern are aiming high this season. Photo: Foter
With the domestic football scene taking a break this weekend it's the perfect opportunity to focus on another flourishing sport in both Germany and Munich. This weekend at the O2 World Arena in Berlin is 'Top Four 2013', effectively the semi-finals and final of the German Basketball Cup. FC Bayern Basketball qualified with an impressive 77:69 win over Brose Baskets (from Bamberg). This victory should not be understated - Bamberg have lifted both the league and cup in Germany for the last three seasons and represent formidable opponents. Indeed, they are the only team above Bayern as the league...

Basketball ready to bounce back

Jumping through hoops for success. Photo FC Bayern Basketball
When football appears to be the only spoken currency in Bavaria, it takes a brave president to back the rise of another sport under the same club badge. Uli Hoeneß has never been a man to shy away from a challenge, just look at Javi Martinez this summer, but basketball? FC Bayern Munich Basketball has been hiding away for far too long and is too often mistaken for its noisy footballing neighbour. The rejuvenation of the side is no marketing ploy either, there is history and pride at stake. The unification of sports under one club name is something that stretches back to the origins of...

Uli Hoeness's new project, FC Bayern Basketball, hope to advance in German League Playoffs

FC Bayern hope to meet Germany's reigning champions, Bamberg, in the semi-finals, but first they must get by the Artland Dragons on the road. So far it's been a classic back-and-forth series, and tonight's game is the decider.
Tonight FC Bayern plays a very important game in the grand plan of being an even larger brand name in the world of club sports. A few years ago Uli Hoeness, President of Bayern Munich, made a conscious decision that has born fruit much ahead of most people's earlier predictions. Mr Hoeness saw an opportunity to compete for trophies against the likes of FC Barcelona, Real Madrid, or Panathinakos. So Mr Hoeness began building a proper basketball team. FC Bayern had meandered around in the lower leagues for some time, had few fans following the team, and rarely demonstrated much interest in being...

Stars Shine for the BBL

American John Bryant was the man amongst the stars. Photo: TMT Sports
Ludwigsburg - John Bryant scored 23 points including 10 in the deciding 4th quarter to lead the International team to an 89-84 victory in the Beko BBL All Star Game.  Bryant's performance earned him Most Valuable Player honors and keeps the National team winless in the history of the mid-season exhibition. The National team comprised of German players have never won the All Star Game when matched up against the international stars of the Basketball Bundesliga.  The start of this game had the look that this year would be different.  Brose Baskets' Tibor Pleiss and FC Bayern...

Ballers lose in Bamberg

Guard Steffen Hamann led Bayern in scoring but it wasn't enough to get by Bamberg. Photo: Sperduto/TMT
Stechert Arena, Bamberg - FC Bayern Basketball lost its sixth consecutive game on the road, this time to the Brose Baskets 89-77. Anthony Tucker scored 23 points and Casey Jacobsen added 18 points by hitting on all 10 of his free-throws to lead the Baskets.  Munich were led by captain Steffen Hamann's 18 points and 8 assists.  Jared Homan scored 17 points and grabbed 8 rebounds but it was not enough to beat the defending Beko BBL champs. The difference in the game was the second quarter, Bayern were outscored 28-9.  It was sloppy phase for the visitors, shooting 4-for-13...

Hamann leads Bayern to victory

Bayern captain Steffen Hamann could not be contained by Bayreuth. Photo: Sperduto/TMT Sports
Audi Dome, Munich - Steffen Hamann scored 22 points as FC Bayern Basketball defeated BBC Bayreuth 73-65 in a Bavarian derby edition of a Beko BBL game.  Hamann also added 4 assists and 3 steals as he helped Bayern out of an early deficit.  BBC started the game on an 8-0 run but could not stop the Bayern captain from scoring six points and keeping the home side close.  Bayreuth led 21-18 after the first quarter thanks to a buzzer beater by Corey Stokes.  Bayern's head coach Dirk Bauermann did not agree that the shot was on time, and his argument with the refs earned him a...

FC Bayern Munich Basketball is hoping for a slam dunk

Joining the hosts FC Bayern Munich Basketball will be European powerhouses Besiktas from Turkey, CSKA Moscow, along with Zalgiris Kaunas from Lithuania. Ballers exact revenge on Ulm

Center Jared Homan dominated the middle early for Bayern...
Audi Dome, Munich - There's not many times a team gets another chance, in the same exact situation, and get to actually change a defeat that should have been a victory.  The New England Patriots had the exact situation play out in Super Bowl 46, but could not overcome fate and their loss to the New York Giants from four years ago. Back on January 4th, FC Bayern Basketball came back against ratiopharm ulm, took the lead with seconds left, only to lose on a freak last second shot.  And the exact same situation played out last night as Ulm took a double-digit lead, FCB battled back,...

Ballers crush Oldenburg

Center Jared Homan dominated the paint throughout the night. Photo: Sperduto/TMT Sports
Audi Dome, Munich - FC Bayern Basketball are slowly becoming like their big brother on the football side.  Sold out arena, celeb sightings, highly entertaining games, and international stars.  Oh, and victories. Most of the starting 11 of FC Bayern München were in the stands and they witnessed their mirror image on the court.  German internationals Steffen Hamann and Robin Benzing both scored 16 points as the Ballers dominated EWE Baskets Oldenburg 102-71 in front of a soldout, frenzy crowd Saturday night. From the beginning, Hamann was intent on setting the pace.  He had...

Ballers in the middle of Bavarian Tour

Head coach Dirk Bauermann hopes to navigate Bayern to victories on the road. Photo: Sperduto/TMT Sports
Munich - FC Bayern Basketball are in the middle of their Bavarian portion of the schedule that will decide their immediate future.  The Ballers travel to Ulm this evening and then to Bamberg on Saturday, hoping to win on the road and clinch a spot in the German basketball domestic cup tournament, the DBB Pokal. They split their first two derby matches, losing at Würzburg versus the s.Oliver Baskets before Christmas and then taking care of BBC Bayreuth at home before the turn of the calendar.  One more win in either of these next two matches may help secure a spot in the...
