Handball invades Munich

Munich - Over the past years, our fair city has started to offer more top level professional sports than just football. Ice hockey. Basketball. Volleyball. Golf. And there's always been top level skiing and other winter sport offerings.

But there is a sport that has not yet invaded the professional scene in the Bavarian capital - handball. For some sports fans, handball is a sport that shows up every four years in the Olympics.

But for those who follow the sport, and play it at their respective clubs around Munich and the region, tonight is a chance to watch the best Germany has to offer as the TOYOTA Handball Bundesliga (HBL) will return for the second consecutive year to play their Super Cup tonight at the Olympiahalle.

Last year's league champs HSV Hamburg will take on domestic cup holders THW Kiel. These two clubs will meet for the fourth consecutive year, the fifth time in the past six, in the season opening event. Last year, HSV outlasted Kiel to win 27-26 and it propelled them to the title.

Kiel have won the Super Cup five times, the last time back in 2008, beating, yes, Hamburg 33-28. But in 2009, when the event moved to Nuremberg, Kiel were both league and cup defenders however it was HSV who won 35-28.

"If one were to watch the last year, they would think this matchup is similar to the 'El Clásico' in Spain," admits Hamburg's Pascal Hens. "We haven't met them in the Champions League (like Real Madrid and FC Barcelona have), and if we do, then it can reach that level."

One would think this northern rivalry would be better suited to be played closer to home. But the league is not only hoping to grow the game, but connect families.

"I have a personal connection to Munich," revealed Dominik Klein of Thiel. "My wife played many years in Ismaning and comes from Oberschleissheim. So it's great to see friends and family when we come each year. But there are also many handball clubs in and around the city and our league can connect to them."

The city of Hamburg is currently suffering through a tough start to the football season, as HSV have yet to record a win. The handball version will look to continue their recent domination over Kiel and give the port city something to cheer.

The Super Cup starts at 20:00 CET at the Olympiahalle, tickets still available at many outlets around the city.

Spoils shared in tense baseball clash

In an outcome which helped only one club - the league-leading Munich Caribes - the Gauting Indians and Ellwangen Elks played to a split on Saturday. In two tense contests, the hosts Gauting won the first one 2-0, but fell short as the visiting Elk narrowly held on to a 6-5 win in the second game.

It's been a week of some remarkable sport. First, Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund marched triumphantly to the Champions League final. Sebastian Vettel (Red Bull) ahead of Kimi Raikkonen and Romain Grosjean (both Lotus) is an exact repeat of last year's podium at the Bahrain GP. While the race lacked excitement at the front, there were plenty of stunning manoeuvres further down the grid. As if it had been downloaded from some vacation-paradise website, beautiful weather descended on the Munich area to bless last weekend's opening of the 2013 baseball season.

For three out of four Munich-area clubs (Baldham Boars, Haar Disciples, Gauting Indians and Munich Caribes) playing in the 2nd and 3rd divisions of German baseball it was not all sunshine though. In four fixtures, each a doubleheader, the aggregate record was 3 wins and 5 losses, with some results potentially already indicating some joy and trouble ahead for some of the teams.

Thanks - or rather, no thanks - to the local area's inclement weather at the weekend, three of Munich's suburban baseball teams had their games postponed, including a much-anticipated 2. Bundesliga-South "battle of the 'burbs" clash between Haar Disciples 2nd team and Baldham Boars. The Gauting Indians' home fixture against the Füssen Royal Bavarians in the Regionalliga Southeast likewise fell victim to the rain.

The Haar Disciples suffered their first defeat in the new Bundesliga-South season with a split against the Heidenheim Heideköpfe over the weekend. The word "split" seems to have vanished from the vocabulary of the Munich Caribes though. Two divisions lower in the Regionalliga Southeast, the Caribes swept up in their two home games against the Ellwangen Elks to boost their season record to 8-0.

The Haar Disciples finally got their 1. Bundesliga-South season underway on Saturday, winning a pair of extremely tight games at home against the Bad Homburg Hornets and in the process, showcased two of their new ballplaying imports, Dadynoel Lorenzo and Brian Fields. In the 2. Bundesliga-South, the Baldham Boars also notched up their first win. After their first fixture against Regensburg a week ago fell victim to the rain, Haar's baseballers won 7-6 and 5-4 under new head coach Keith Maxwell.

Heavy rains forced the cancellation of games by two local Munich area teams last weekend; the Haar Disciples' 1. Bundesliga South season, home opener against Regensburg and the Baldham Boars home fixture against Mainz in the 2. Bundesliga South, both on Saturday.

This left only one fixture in the local area to be played, but it was not a happy one from the Munich baseball scene's standpoint. Sadly the Haar Disicples' 2nd team, playing in the 2. Bundesliga South, lost both home games on Sunday against the Neuenburg Atomics, by 9-2 and 5-4.

In a city bursting with sporting success, the road has never been an easy one for the Munich Cowboys. Last year's stuttering season included a relegation-round win to keep them in the GFL (German Football League) South and did little to convince those watching on there was much potential. The signs and sounds from the Cowboys camp this year though, suggest a more optimistic message.

Flawless driving and a very quick Ferrari secured Fernando Alonso his 31st race victory in his 200th F1 start. The Spaniard crossed the finish line ahead of Kimi Raikkonen (Lotus) and Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes). Red Bull's Sebastian Vettel, who made a late charge for the podium, was fourth, with Jenson Button (McLaren) rounding off the top five.

Vettel still leads the Drivers' World Championship ahead of Raikkonen and Alonso, but just three races into the season, there's still not much between them.
