Montreal has not been kind to Sebastian Vettel in the past. This time though, the German comfortably controlled the race from the front and banished his Canada curse with a win that extends his lead in the Drivers World Championship to 36 points ahead of Fernando Alonso. 

Tyres have so far been a major talking point at nearly every GP this year, but in Montreal they weren't as influential as the race took on a different feel to those already run this year. Tyre strategy remained an important part of the race, but most teams had similar plans with a three-stop race so there were hardly any confusing situations involving cars, race restrictions and varying strategies.

There were plenty of good battles out on the track and for once, it didn't appear as if the drivers were frantically trying to preserve their rubber, which was a pleasant sight. Mercedes' Lewis Hamilton finished in a strong third place, after starting the race from second. His team mate Nico Rosberg came in fifth and on the whole one got the sense that the tyre tests that were conducted with Pirelli might have helped Mercedes out quite a bit. They certainly didn't look anymore prone to tyre-wear than they used to. A hearing in front of the international tribunal has been set where Mercedes will be allowed to justify and explain the conditions of the much debated tyre tests ahead of the Monaco GP two weeks ago.

Fernando Alonso (Ferrari) had a solid race and finished second having started the race from sixth. It was another very controlled performance by the Spaniard and it paid off with a good point haul, thus minimising Vettel's advantage in the drivers ranking.

In reality though, the German was never in much danger throughout the race. He touched the wall with his right rear tyre in the early stages of the race when he appeared to be pushing to increase the gap to second place, but fortunately for him his car stayed intact and he was able to cruise to the 29th win of his career.
