| IN THE NAME OF LOVE | TBA | Love was and is one of the principal themes in art. Humans have a need to express love, and the pain of love, in a tangible form. Literature, music, paintings and sculptures created over the centuries are testimony of their never-ending attempts. The exhibition at the Alexander Tutsek Foundation deals with the many facets of love from a very special perspective: not only the bright, the welcome part of love is explored, but so is its hidden, secretive, and dark side. And all this is expressed using a material that is seldom seen in art displays. On show are 30 objects created by 26 artists from around the world who work mainly with glass and mixed media. HOURS OF OPENING During the exhibitions Tuesday and Wednesday 10 am to 2 pm Thursday 2 pm to 5.30 pm Closed on holidays Where: ALEXANDER TUTSEK-STIFTUNG |
| Resonance and Silence | TBA | Goetz Collection The acoustic perception of moving images in space is one of the great possibilities of video art, which is very much like our ordinary perception. On the other hand, images and sounds can also be interpreted differently and read anew, particularly through the strong impact of sounds on our emotional state. Where: Haus der Kunst |
| Georg Herold | TBA | Can works of art be made of roof laths and caviar? This question has probably often elicited an incredulous shake of the head. Georg Herold, however, has taught us the better. In the early 1980s he used roof laths and, since 1988/89, has repeatedly worked with Beluga caviar in his pictures, objects, multiples and installations. Plain wooden slats still play a pivotal role in his works to this day, since – as he says – they “can be made to match every statement exactly.” While such objects were considered non-aesthetic at that time, the use of caviar was seen as a provocation. Bafflement mixed with a slight feeling of horror and a certain disgust. Over the past 40 years an extensive and complex œuvre has been created that has successfully been shown in numerous solo and thematic exhibitions both nationally and internationally. Where: Museum Brandhorst |
| Franz Marc – Cats | TBA | Franz Marc’s painting Mädchen mit Katze (Girl with Cat), executed in 1912, is an astonishing work. And it is all the more surprising given the fact that at this late stage in his career he had abandoned the portrayal of the human figure. Nonetheless, this painting gives emphatic expression to Marc’s ideas concerning release from the entanglements of earthly existence and his striving to capture the innocence of animals in nature. Maria, the artist’s wife, takes on the role of the Madonna and the kitten in her lap the Saviour. The painting melds a number of strands of thought and artistic ideas which are also central to the exhibition itself. Examples are the motif of the cat which appears in Marc’s early prints, his early sketchbook sheets and a number of key paintings, a mysterious creature but nestling like a child. Similarly, the figure of Maria Marc is transformed from lover and wife into a model for his image of the Madonna, the saviour of the world. Open Tuesday-Sunday and on bank holidays: April-October 10 am - 6 pm November-March 10 am - 5 pm Closed on 24 and 31 December Where: Franz Marc Museum |
