Munich hopes for Winter Olympic candidacy

Recent news of the USA's decision to withdraw from the bid to host the 2022 Winter Olympic Games, has led to a sudden rise in German hopes.
Although the host nation for the 2022 games will not be chosen until 2015, the CSU is of the opinion that this leaves a huge window of opportunity for Germany, and believes it is an opportunity that should be taken. According to Munich's newspaper the 'Münchner Merkur', Bavarian Sports Minister Ludwig Spaenle of the CSU believes that Germany would be the perfect host nation thanks to its combination of ideal winter sports venues and outstanding athletes.

After being defeated by Korea for the chance to host the 2018 Winter Games, the DOSB - The German Olympic Sports Association - decided that for the time being, there would be no further attempts to enter into the race for candidacy. The decision of the US to withdraw, however, has seemingly turned this attitude on its head. Before deciding on whether to go ahead with the bid or not, politicians will wait until after the allocation of the 2020 summer games has been awarded, which takes place September 2013, and after the Federal and Bavarian elections have taken place.

It will have been about 9 years since Europe hosted an Olympic Winter Games, with the 2010 Games having been held in Vancouver, Canada, the 2014 Games will take place in Sochi, Russia, and the 2018 Games in Pyeongchang, Korea (on their third bid). But despite this long absence of the Winter Games from European soil, the CSU's enthusiasm is not shared by everyone. Some of the other potential candidate cities could be St. Moritz (Switzerland), Barcelona (Spain), L'viv (Ukraine) and Oslo (Norway). St. Moritz, which hosted the Winter Games in both 1928 and 1948, have already beaten Geneva in a competition for the right to be the Swiss candidate.

Munich's Mayor, Christian Ude of the SPD, seems to have taken a reserved approach to this new information, while the Green party has already expressed hesitance in supporting the bid if it comes around. Be that as it may, many agree that the 1972 Summer Games had an enormous positive impact on the city's infrastructure. The most obvious examples are the S-Bahn system and the pedestrian zone in both Kaufinger and Neuhauser Straße, as well as nearly the entire complex of the Olympiapark.

If Bavaria's capital were to receive the bid to host the 2022 Winter Olympic games, it would not only be the fiftieth anniversary of the 1972 Summer Olympics, but would be the first time that any city had hosted both the Summer and Winter games.

Migraines linked to sleep disorders

Credit: morguefile
New research from the University of California San Francisco, US, has identified a gene alteration linked to both migraines and a sleep disorder. Migraine is a complicated disorder characterized by severe headache and sensitivity to light and sound. In some instances it can cause nausea and vomiting. Migraine affects over 10% of the world's population, which amounts to a staggering 700 million people, according to reports by the National Institute of Neurological disorders and Stroke of the United States. For several years, scientists and doctors have believed that the constriction and...

The weeks after and the time before

More celebrations to come next year? It's hard to think otherwise. Photo: Jonathan Harding
After weeks of rain, the sun has decided to arrive in southern Germany and with it a momentary pause before another chapter in the illustrious story that is Bayern Munich. In the last month, they have revelled in the most remarkable of treble-winning seasons but since then there has been time to reflect.

Time stands still for no man, or football club for that matter. Soon qualification for the new Champions League campaign will begin and Bayern's thrilling battle with Dortmund in Wembley will become another entry in the competition's history. Yet the arrival of Pep Guardiola in the next two...

Bayern's treble-winning coach Heynckes says goodbye

A sad farewell from Bayern but maybe not from football... At least, not just yet. Photo: Flickr
The world's media assembled in Munich on Tuesday lunchtime to discover the truth behind the much-speculated future of Bayern Munich's outgoing coach Jupp Heynckes. The treble-winning coach was flanked on stage at the Allianz Arena by his close friend Uli Hoeness and board chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge.

Recently, media speculated that he might be tempted with a return to Real Madrid. Heynckes, a fluent Spanish speaker, lifted the Champions League with Real in 1998 before being unceremoniously dumped. With Real looking for a new coach after Jose Mourinho's departure, rumours lingered that a...

Weather gets the better of Munich baseball clubs

The Tuebingen Hawks baseball field was under water on Sunday, forcing the club to cancel its weekend fixture in the 1. Bundesliga-South against the Regensburg Legionaries. Photo: Tübingen Hawks
Score last weekend's regional baseball activity as follows: Weather 5 - Munich Teams 0.

After any number of washouts over the month of May, this past weekend it finally happened: All five Munich-area baseball clubs playing in German baseball's top three divisions saw their doubleheader fixtures fall victim to the rain and/or baseball fields made unplayable by the rain.

The washouts included the Haar Disciples 1st team's game in Stuttgart (1. Bundesliga South), the Haar Disciples 2nd team away against the Regensburg 2nd team, the Baldham Boars' home game against the Karlsruhe Cougars (both 2....

Rain ruins Cowboys run

A day that left the M on the pitch all but covered in water as the Cowboys fell to a 27-20 defeat. Photo: Munich Cowboys
The Munich Cowboys good started was spoiled by penalties and missed chances as they fell to a 27-20 defeat against the visiting Rhein-Neckar Bandits, leaving their season record at 2-2.

With Bayern Munich's domestic cup final taking up the evening slot for sporting entertainment, the Munich Cowboys home venture against the visiting Rhein-Neckar Bandits looked an easy option for the afternoon. The incessant rain didn't help swing any undecided parties though and it made for both depleted numbers and a tricky afternoon on the football field.

With the Cowboys forced to accommodate some changes due...

Bayern treblemakers in Berlin

Celebrations all around for a historic achievement. Photo: Bundesliga Fanatic
It was fitting that Bayern Munich sealed an historic treble in a city steeped in its own history by downing VfB Stuttgart 3-2 in a gripping German Cup final in Berlin.

Bayern's Thomas Müller talked pre-match about "re-writing history" and the Bavarians were as good as their word, becoming the first ever German side to win a treble of league, cup and Champions League (European Cup in old money) in the same season with a tense victory over their southern German rivals in Berlin's Olympic Stadium. Having clinched the Bundesliga in record fashion and after last week's dramatic victory against...

Molecule that triggers itch sensation is found

Credit: wikipediacommons
Researchers from the National Institute of Dental and Cranofacial Research in Maryland, USA, discovered the molecule that triggers the brain response to itch. The study, which was published in Science, was done in mice, but similar results are expected in humans. The team, led by neuroscientist Dr Mark Hoon, searched for compounds involved in the sensation of itch in sensory nerve cells, which are specialized in responding to physical stimuli from pain to temperature changes. "We know these cells are also required for itch" says Dr Hoon, but so far, little is known about how they recognize...

Why do some animals turn cannibalistic?

Under the right circumstances, fruit flies can evolve cannibalistic behavior, a new study says.

While cannibalism was considered uncommon and of little evolutionary importance in the past, it is now recognized that it can serve several functions, including nutrition, minimizing competition and regulating population density. Cannibalism has been identified in over 1300 species. "The most likely function of cannibalism in non-carnivorous species is nutrition, however it may as well serve other functions such as eliminating competitors for resources and mates", said Dr Roshan Vijendravarma, an...

Heroin vaccine blocks drug addiction in rats

Credit: everystockphoto.com
A team of scientists from The Scripps Research Institute in California, USA, has reported promising results for a new vaccine against heroin. The vaccine can target not only heroin directly, but also its specific breakdown products in the blood, effectively stopping them from reaching the brain, at least in rats. "Vaccines against drugs of abuse, including heroin, have been tested and developed since the early 1970s, however most attempts failed due to either targeting morphine or targeting heroin and all their metabolites in a very non-specific way", said Dr Joel Schlosburg, first author in...

Bavaria increases flood alerts

The river Isar is dangerously close to bursting its banks in certain parts of the city
The unseasonally wet conditions persisted in recent days, leading to the river Isar rising dangerously amid flood alerts across Bavaria.  Passau was worst hit with both the Donau (Danube) and Inn breaking the banks and completely flooding the old town, in what is considered one of the worst floods in recent times.  In a city renowed for periodic high water levels, due to the meeting of three rivers (Donau, Inn and Ilz), Passau has found itself completely unable to handle this latest emergency, with the German army being called in to assist. Munich has also seen many areas under water, with...

New technique detects early oesophageal cancer

Histology of oesophagus tissue.
Almost 500,000 new cases of oesophageal cancer are diagnosed worldwide every year. However, diagnosis usually only occurs at an advanced stage, and survival over 5 years is less than 15%. As this type of cancer does not form a tumour-like growth, but instead remains flat in appearance, it is extremely difficult to detect early with conventional screening methods. In a recent study published in Science Translational Medicine, a team of researchers and physicians developed a new technique for oesophageal cancer detection using a fluorescently-labelled molecule that sticks to pre-malignant cells...

Robben delivers late to make Bayern champions of Europe

It proved to be a red evening in London as Bayern went one better than last year. Graphic: Matt Hardy
Bayern Munich avenged last year's traumatic final defeat by beating a brave Borussia Dortmund 2-1 in Wembley thanks to a late Arjen Robben winner. Ilkay Gündogan's second-half penalty looked to have taken the game to extra time after cancelling out Mario Mandzukic's opener but the Dutch international had other plans.

It's been a long time coming for Arjen Robben. A poor World Cup final performance was followed by last year's nightmare Champions League final performance with that incredible penalty miss. This time around it looked to be going the same way when chance after chance went amiss....
