Wiggins makes history

Life will never be the same for Bradley Wiggins. The Londoner became the first Briton to claim overall victory in the world's most famous cycle race as he was crowned Tour de France winner. A three-time Olympic champion on the track, Wiggins has fulfilled a lifelong goal on the road and in reaching his "greatest sporting achievement" assures that his name will stand alongside the legends of his sport such as Eddy Merckx, Lance Armstrong and Miguel Indurain.

The win caps an absolutely perfect race for the British team Sky, which claimed a 1-2, after Wiggins' team mate and fellow Briton Chris Froome took second place. The pair dominated the opposition ever since Wiggins took the leader's yellow jersey after stage seven of the 20-stage race. Wiggins won both time trial stages, while the Sky team set a relentless pace through the tour's tough mountain sections to ensure nobody could challenge their leading riders.

Indeed, the only man who seemed capable of challenging Wiggins was Froome himself, who twice in the mountains looked ready to ride away from his team leader, only to look back and remember his team orders - protect the yellow jersey. There has been much speculation as to who is the stronger rider of the two: Froome is perhaps the better climber, but Wiggins, as he showed on Saturday, is currently the world's best time trial rider. It will be interesting to see how Sky approaches things next season. Wiggins has repeatedly said that Froome will soon have his day (Wiggins is 32, Froome 27), even hinting that he would be prepared to ride for him in a tour as Froome has for Wiggins this year. This will surely not be the case in 2013, when Wiggins will be looking to defend his title, meaning Froome may have to leave his lucrative Sky contract to claim the team leader role his talent undoubtedly deserves.

Sunday's final stage to Paris was the usual procession: it is tradition for there to be no attacks on the yellow jersey on the final day. All of which meant that it came down to a sprint finish on the Champs Elysees, where Britain's Mark Cavendish has won for the last three years. By his own high standards, Cavendish has had a quiet tour, seeming perfectly happy to play a team role in support of Wiggins's yellow-jersey quest. Cavendish has barely addressed the media all tour, and it is thought that the world champion has his sights firmly set on securing the Olympic road race title in just a few days time. It has even been suggested that he lost a few kilos in order to be able to handle the hills better on the Olympic course. Some speculated that the alleged weight loss had cost him a fraction of his explosive sprint power. True or not, he still had the speed to claim a fourth consecutive win in Paris and cap a fantastic three weeks for British cycling.

Cavendish, Wiggins, Froome and David Millar - another British stage winner on the tour this year - will all now turn their attention to the Olympic road race on 28 July. There, the team will likely ride for Cavendish, but for now one man dominates the spotlight. "I've got to get used to it, it's going to take a while," said Wiggins on Sunday. "I'm just trying to soak it all in. You never imagine it will happen to you but it's amazing."

Spoils shared in tense baseball clash

A relaxed group of Indians wait to take to the field before the first game against the Ellwangen Elks in Gauting. Photo: Douglas Sutton
In an outcome which helped only one club - the league-leading Munich Caribes - the Gauting Indians and Ellwangen Elks played to a split on Saturday. In two tense contests, the hosts Gauting won the first one 2-0, but fell short as the visiting Elk narrowly held on to a 6-5 win in the second game.

The results - on a weekend when there was no other baseball in the Munich area - left Ellwangen with a won-lost record in the Regionalliga South-East of 7-5 and Gauting with 6-4. So the outcome did nothing to help either team try to close the gap with the Caribes who stand alone at the top of the...

Brilliant Alonso wins home grand prix

Fernando Alonso was all smiles in front of his home sunshine. Photo: AP
Of late, Spain have been struggling to rediscover that "winning feeling" over Germany but Fernando Alonso provided that coveted feeling as he sped past Nico Rosberg and Sebastian Vettel to secure victory at the Circuit de Catalunya in Barcelona. Lotus driver Kimi Raikkonen saw the chequered flag in second, with Alonso's teammate Felipe Massa getting his first podium of the season with a third place finish.

In a race that was once again heavily dominated by tyre degradation and management, all the on-track action seemed to take place in the opening laps. Sebastian Vettel drew first blood, as he...

Baseball Germany: A fan of the Cincinnati Reds

Donald Lutz works on his bunt technique in batting practice before a game for the German national team in Regensburg in September 2012. Lutz, 24, made history by becoming the first German to be called up to the Major Leagues in the US when he joined the Cincinnati Reds club and appeared at the end of April and early May in games against the St. Louis Cardinals. Photo: Doug Sutton
It's been a week of some remarkable sport. First, Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund marched triumphantly to the Champions League final. Then NBA player Jason Collins became the first active professional athlete to out himself as gay. In the baseball community in Germany the attention was riveted on a completely different story.

It goes by the name Donald Lutz, and the 24-year-old made sporting history when he became the first German ever to be called up to "The Show" - the Major Leagues of baseball.

The historic occasion came when he got a phone call to join the Cincinnati Reds team for a...

Andrews helps Cowboys edge Wish Bowl

Pre-season is about running the routes, making the blocks and completing the plays. Effectively, it's oiling the machine ahead of the regular season and in the admirable name of the Make A Wish foundation, the Munich Cowboys hosted the US Eagles, a selection of American college players amongst others, for their preseason test drive.

This week's NFL draft has dominated the sporting headlines on the other side of the pond and Garrett Andrews' arrival has all the excitement of a round one pick about it. The wide receiver was one of the best players for the Cowboys on an afternoon where a positive...

Déjà-vu in the desert

It was Vettel-time all over again but fear not, the season is far from over. Photo: Wikimedia Commons
Sebastian Vettel (Red Bull) ahead of Kimi Raikkonen and Romain Grosjean (both Lotus) is an exact repeat of last year's podium at the Bahrain GP. While the race lacked excitement at the front, there were plenty of stunning manoeuvres further down the grid. Fernando Alonso (Ferrari) once again cemented his status as possibly the most complete driver in Formula 1, cutting back through the field after an early wing-flap failure caused him to finish the race without the use of DRS.

Vettel's performance, as he became the first double race winner of the year, heavily resembled his dominant 2011...

Win some, lose more

A beautiful day for baseball in Munich. Photo: Douglas Sutton
As if it had been downloaded from some vacation-paradise website, beautiful weather descended on the Munich area to bless last weekend's opening of the 2013 baseball season.

For three out of four Munich-area clubs (Baldham Boars, Haar Disciples, Gauting Indians and Munich Caribes) playing in the 2nd and 3rd divisions of German baseball it was not all sunshine though. In four fixtures, each a doubleheader, the aggregate record was 3 wins and 5 losses, with some results potentially already indicating some joy and trouble ahead for some of the teams.

In the 2. Bundesliga South division, the...

Rain postpones "battle of the 'burbs"

Caribes batter Johannes Knuth starts his swing at a pitch from Stuttgart. Photo: Douglas Sutton
Thanks - or rather, no thanks - to the local area's inclement weather at the weekend, three of Munich's suburban baseball teams had their games postponed, including a much-anticipated 2. Bundesliga-South "battle of the 'burbs" clash between Haar Disciples 2nd team and Baldham Boars. The Gauting Indians' home fixture against the Füssen Royal Bavarians in the Regionalliga Southeast likewise fell victim to the rain.

The other local Munich area teams - the Haar Disicples first team in the 1. Bundesliga South and the Munich Caribes in the Regionalliga Southeast - played away, with diametrically...

Haar Disciples in split, undefeated Caribes roll to 2 more wins

Caribes' pitcher Jakob Lipke displays his power in delivering a pitch against Ellwangen. In four innings of relief, Lipke gave up no runs and only 2 hits, while striking out five batters. Photo: Douglas Sutton
The Haar Disciples suffered their first defeat in the new Bundesliga-South season with a split against the Heidenheim Heideköpfe over the weekend. The word "split" seems to have vanished from the vocabulary of the Munich Caribes though. Two divisions lower in the Regionalliga Southeast, the Caribes swept up in their two home games against the Ellwangen Elks to boost their season record to 8-0.

In a bit of a paradox, the results of the first-division clubs were high-scoring affairs while the contests of the Caribes and Elks were low-scoring, nail-biting contests. Quite often, scores in the lower...

Haar Disciples off to winning start, Baldham gets first wins

Caribes batter Jimi Roura awaits a pitch from Ingolstadt in a Regionalliga game on Sunday. The Caribes won both games in Ingolstadt, 13-0 and 14-2, to remain undefeated in the new season. Photo: Douglas Sutton
The Haar Disciples finally got their 1. Bundesliga-South season underway on Saturday, winning a pair of extremely tight games at home against the Bad Homburg Hornets and in the process, showcased two of their new ballplaying imports, Dadynoel Lorenzo and Brian Fields. In the 2. Bundesliga-South, the Baldham Boars also notched up their first win. After their first fixture against Regensburg a week ago fell victim to the rain, Haar's baseballers won 7-6 and 5-4 under new head coach Keith Maxwell.

The first game was full of drama as the Hornets scored three runs in the 8th inning to go up 6-3 for...

Rain cuts down the action, Caribes take league lead

Munich Caribes player-coach Steve Walker delivers a pitch in Sunday's game at the Füssen Royal Bavarians. Walker is throwing from a pitcher's mound of gravel, on a baseball field that almost entirely consists of hard-packed gravel. Photo: Douglas Sutton
Heavy rains forced the cancellation of games by two local Munich area teams last weekend; the Haar Disciples' 1. Bundesliga South season, home opener against Regensburg and the Baldham Boars home fixture against Mainz in the 2. Bundesliga South, both on Saturday.

This left only one fixture in the local area to be played, but it was not a happy one from the Munich baseball scene's standpoint. Sadly the Haar Disicples' 2nd team, playing in the 2. Bundesliga South, lost both home games on Sunday against the Neuenburg Atomics, by 9-2 and 5-4.

Meanwhile two local clubs playing in the Regionalliga...

Optimistic Cowboys sending the right message

Number one QB Patrick Carey in preseason training. Carey has certainly improved his movement in the pocket, showing quicker feet and a great range of movement when scrambling. Photo: Jonathan Harding
In a city bursting with sporting success, the road has never been an easy one for the Munich Cowboys. Last year's stuttering season included a relegation-round win to keep them in the GFL (German Football League) South and did little to convince those watching on there was much potential. The signs and sounds from the Cowboys camp this year though, suggest a more optimistic message.

Head Coach James Craig has hailed the now 10-man coaching staff as the biggest improvement on last year. "I've got two young coordinators who I really trust and having such an improved coaching staff makes a big...

Dominant Alonso secures victory in China

Kimi 'The Iceman' finished second but keeps his good form up in the 2013 season. Photo: Wikimedia Commons
Flawless driving and a very quick Ferrari secured Fernando Alonso his 31st race victory in his 200th F1 start. The Spaniard crossed the finish line ahead of Kimi Raikkonen (Lotus) and Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes). Red Bull's Sebastian Vettel, who made a late charge for the podium, was fourth, with Jenson Button (McLaren) rounding off the top five.

Vettel still leads the Drivers' World Championship ahead of Raikkonen and Alonso, but just three races into the season, there's still not much between them.

The start of the race saw pole-sitter Hamilton pull away cleanly, while Raikkonen lost two places...
