Weekend sports action for local clubs

So, how was your weekend?  Probably not as good as Generali Haching, who won their third consecutive domestic cup Sunday afternoon.  Read about it here.

As for the other clubs in town, it was not positive on the pitch - a devastating loss and a disappointing draw.  On the ice and hardwood, the teams roll on.  Here's your wrap up.

On the brink - FC Bayern München have lost three matches in a row, and are in line to lose more than just matches in the coming days.

Hannover 96 got goals from Mohammed Abdellaoue, Konstantin Rausch, and Sergio Pinto and solidified their spot for a Champions League qualification berth with a 3-1 win over Bayern Saturday afternoon in Bundesliga action.

Arjen Robben scored the lone goal for the visitors, but it wasn't enough to keep the defending champions from dropping into further turmoil.

In just 8 days, FCB have suffered three defeats that eliminated them from the Bundesliga title race, the German domestic cup competition, and possibly a spot in next year's Champions League.

"We are all disappointed with the match and the result," said team president Karl-Heinz Rummenigge.  "The way we played today, that was the lowest point of our season."

And it could get lower.  Next week, Bayern host Inter Milan in the return leg of the knockout stage of this year's Champions League.  Munich won the 1st leg 1-0 at the San Siro but after the team's recent form, that lead may not be safe from the Italians to overcome.  A loss in the competition may cost Louis van Gaal his job as head coach.

It is not far-fetched to assume van Gaal may be replaced.  Two years ago, when it was evident Jürgen Klinsmann had lost leadership of the club and Bayern may not qualify for Europe, management fired Klinsmann and replaced him with Jupp Heynckes.  The team stormed back to earn 2nd place in the table and accomplished the minimum goal.

However this year, there may not be a silver lining.  FCB sit 5th in the table, 7 points out of the automatic berth.  Hannover occupy the qualification spot, 5 points clear of Bayern.  And no candidate has emerged to spark this club back to life.  Tough matches lie ahead, including next week's match at the Allianz Arena versus Hamburg.  Kickoff is at 15:30 on Saturday.

Home is where the draw is - TSV 1860 München continue to show their fans new levels of disappointment this season, and Friday night was no different.

A week after winning a match on the road in the final minutes, they gave up a goal in the 85th minute Friday that lead to their 6th draw at home, a 1-1 result against Red-White Oberhausen.

Benjamin Lauth scored his 11th goal of the season in the 73rd minute to give the Lions a 1-0 lead.  Two minutes later, Stefan Aigner could have sealed the victory but was stopped by Oberhausen's keeper Sören Pirson.

Substitute Daniel Gordon was able to win a header off a flank from teammate Oliver Petersch and earn the draw with a goal five minutes from time.

"We saw today, that this winless streak the past month at home is in our heads," lamented 1860 head coach Reiner Maurer.  "We are always giving away the match."

The Lions travel to Bielefeld next weekend to taken on DSC Arminia and return home on March 13th to host Karlruher SC at the Allianz Arena.

EHC clinch playoff birth - David Wrigley scored two goals to help EHC overcome an early deficit and defeat the Krefeld Penguins 3-2 in the penalty shootout.  The win clinches a playoff spot for the club in its first year in the DEL, German hockey's top flight.

"We are in the playoffs in our debut season, which is unique" said Sports Director Christian Winkler.  "We are proud of our accomplishment, and what comes after, it's just icing on the cake."

There was more reason to worry than celebrate only a minute into the game.  Krefeld's Boris Blank scored 57 seconds in to the game to give the 4,449 fans at the King Palace a reason to cheer.  Six and half minutes later Blank assisted on Pascal Trepanier's power play goal and the Penguins led 2-0.

EHC however turned it around, getting a power play goal themselves from Wrigley 6:39 into the 2nd period.  Wrigley would get another assist from Dylan Gyori and even up the game 5 minutes into the final frame.  After a scoreless overtime, Kyle Helms and Eric Schneider were able to beat Penguins goaltender Scott Langkow.  Both attempts from Krefeld were turned away by Munich's Sebastian Elwing.

The win was Munich's second consecutive come-from-behind victory.  On Friday, they shocked the Panthers in Augsburg with 3 unanswered goals in the final period.  EHC now improve back up to 6th in the table with only two more matches left in the regular season.  They hope to improve their standing to avoid the pre-playoffs by continuing their win streak.  After traveling to Berlin Friday night to take on the Ice Bears in Berlin, the final regular season match is at Olympia Eissportzentrum on Sunday against local rival ERC Ingolstadt.  The derby faces off at 14:30.

Bayern Basketball outduel Knights - Aleksandar Nadjfeji scored 22 points and grabbed 10 rebounds Sunday evening to lead Bayern 82-61 over VfL Kirchheim.  Wyrick Beckham added 9 points and four other players each added 8 points in the team-effort.

The game was much different than the shootout these two teams played back in November, a 100-90 win for Munich on the road.  In that game, Cedric Brooks and Gordon Scott combined for 43 points for the Knights.  This time around, they only tallied 17 points.

"Our approach is a defense-first mentality," said Bayern head coach Dirk Bauermann on stopping the high-octane tandem of the Knights.  "We struggled offensively, when you have nights like that, you better play better defensively."

In the first half, Bayern could only shoot 45% from the field, including 1-for-11 from beyond the arc.  But it was Nadjfeji scoring 16 of his game-high point total in the first half that kept his team ahead 39-33 at the half.

"(Nadjfeji) is as good as anybody finding gaps and holes in the opposing defense," commented Bauermann on his forward's performance.  "At this level he uses his cleverness and experience to make the defense look bad."

Bayern then turned up the defense at the beginning of the 3rd quarter, that led to a 11-2 run and a 15 point lead from which Kirchheim would never come back.  Bayern would outscore Kirchheim 43-28 in the 2nd half, mainly due to improved shooting and 6-of-10 from beyond the arc.

"As long as we defend and get stops on a consistent basis, we are going to score more than enough point to win the basketball game," Bauermann analyzed later.  "We had beautiful ball movement by making that extra pass.  We play with an element of patience and savvy and at the end of the day, it usually pays off."

The win is Bayern's 17th in a row and another win next week at Crailsheim will assure the club promotion to the German top flight, Basketball Bundesliga.

The team returns home to Munich Square Garden on March 19th to host BG Karlsruhe.  Tip off at 19:30.

Vettel lead Red Bull 1-2 in Korea

After trailing Fernando Alonso by nearly 20 points a few races ago, Sebastian Vettel is doing all he can to claim a third consecutive world driving championship after winning the Korean Grand Prix on Sunday afternoon in Yeongnam . The German won his third race in a row, finishing 8.2 seconds ahead of his Red Bull teammate, Mark Webber. Fernando Alonso had to settle for third. Vettel now leads the championship for the first time this season by six points with four races remaining.

"I think it was a perfect day for me and the team" said Vettel later. "It was important to get a good start. I was...

As millions of visitors descend on Munich for the world's most popular beer festival, Michael Mould makes sure football lovers get the latest from arguably the world's most popular football league. Saturday saw six 3pm kick-offs in the Premier League in an intriguing day that saw Champions League winners Chelsea snatch three points from Arsenal at the Emirates to cement their position at the top of the table. It was a tight game at the Emirates and one Arsenal may feel they should have won, the home side spurning chances and succumbing to soft goals from set-pieces as Spanish duo Juan Mata and...

Lions savage Sandhausen in one-sided affair

1860 Munich's comprehensive 4-0 win against SV Sandhausen marked the culmination of an excellent week for Moritz Stoppelkamp, the player scoring his second goal in as many games after reclaiming his place in the starting eleven in the midweek victory at FC Ingolstadt 04.

Stoppelkamp had hinted at some dissatisfaction at losing his place in the side in the first place due more, according to Coach Reiner Maurer, to tactical naivety than any issue over performance.

His comments certainly raised tensions within the camp "He's young and he will learn" said Sporting Director Florian Hinterberger...

1860 Munich victorious in Upper Bavarian Derby

Travelling fans of 1860 Munich in the House that Audi Built
There's nothing like a lovable underdog. I should know because I've been following 1860 Munich for years, and for most of that time that's exactly what they were. The perennial underachievers. At some point every season, you realise this one's just not going to be it. They might one day make it back to the top flight of German football, but not this year. It's always a sad day when you finally come to terms with such a reality.

Which is what makes this season so uncomfortable. They lost some important offensive power at the end of last season, and many fans were resigned to another...

EHC Red Bull come up empty

EHC Red Bull München 0 Augsburg Panthers 2 The first big derby of the season was watched by 4309 expectant fans on Friday as the Augsburg Panthers visited the Eishalle. A fiery atmosphere was created during the pre-game build up with home support keen to see a continuation of last season's form, twice beating Augsburg on home ice including a 5-0 drubbing in a sold out Olympiahalle. EHC got the puck into the AEV zone quickly, but were immediately hit on the break and confusion between Felix Petermann and Blake Sloan in the Munich defence allowed Panthers hotshot Sergio Somma room to shoot. He...

As millions of visitors descend on Munich for the world's most popular beer festival, Michael Mould makes sure football lovers get the latest from arguably the world's most popular football league. German star Lukas Podolski built on an encouraging start to life in the English Premier League with an excellent goal in a thumping 6-1 victory for Arsenal over a woeful Southampton side reeling after a difficult start to life back in the top division.

Podolski's 25 yard free kick was the pick of the bunch as Arsenal raced into a 4-0 lead inside 38 minutes, the other goals included two own goals...

Lubor Dibelka gets robbed
EHC Red Bull München 2 Adler Mannheim 4 The Eagles from Mannheim flew into Munich on Sunday to take battle against EHC Red Bull Munich.  Both teams have added to their squads in the last week, but the gulf in budgets between them is clear to see as Mannheim took advantage of the current NHL (National Hockey League in North America) lockout to sign German international and Florida Panthers centre Marcel Goc. His salary in Florida is a reported $1.7m per year, but with the lockout he took the chance to team up with his brother in Mannheim.  Munich meanwhile have recruited dual national Ty...

Klopp knows best. Photo wikimedia/Christopher Neundorf
Jürgen Klopp spoke in midweek following his side's 3-3 draw with Eintracht Frankfurt about perfecting Dortmund's tactical system to find the clean sheets needed to complement the goals his side was scoring and perfection was what he got; Dortmund returning to form with a 5-0 demolition of Borussia Mönchengladbach. A double for Marco Reus either side of half time against his former club spearheaded the Dortmund resurgence and was complemented by goals from Neven Subotic, Ilkay Gündogan and a late Jakub Blaszczykowski effort. The win took the reigning champions to third place but no closer to...

1860 Munich look to stretch unbeaten run

Maurer making no waves. Photo Tony Mayger, The Munich Eye.
TSV 1860 Munich's coach Reiner Maurer stressed that there was still a long way to go this season ahead of his side's first ever match against newly promoted SV Sandhausen on Saturday.

A solid start to the season has seen the Lions remain unbeaten this season, building on a run that stretches back to May, indeed table-topping Eintracht Braunschweig are the only club to have even scored a goal at the Allianz Arena this season in a fiercely contested 1-1 draw last Sunday.

Contrastingly, SV Sandhausen's decent start has tailed off recently as they find themselves without a win in four league...

Bayern cruise to five in a row

The record German champions in dominant form. Photo FC Bayern Munich
Bayern Munich shirts and lederhosen, I knew I was in Bavaria for Octoberfest. For many Bavarians though, having a seat for any Bayern Munich game is a privilege and an honour. The reasons for that become increasingly evident with every step you take towards the Allianz Arena. On my way into the stadium I noticed a jumper with the words "Your hate makes us proud". Bayern are one of the best sides in Europe when they want to be, and from the start it was merely a question of just how many Felix Magath's woeful Wolfsburg side would lose by. Coach Jupp Heynckes opted for Xherdan Shaqiri and...

The world famous Munich beer festival has begun and if that alone wasn't reason enough to get you out of your cosy armchair and into the city this weekend, there is also an attractive sporting event to whet your appetite. Bundesliga 2nd division leaders Eintracht Braunschweig are the visitors to the Bavarian capital on Sunday (13:30 KO), hoping to extend their lead at the top of the table. The Lions of Lower Saxony come to the Allianz Arena in fine form and have set the early pace with five wins from as many games, conceding just one goal in the process. They have recorded solid wins over...

Quote of the Week

Collins in happier days : Photo wikimedia commons/ André Zehetbauer
"Even men in prison get their wives to visit." St Kitts and Nevis sprinter Kim Collins was less than impressed after dramatically dropping being booted out of the Olympics after falling out with his team for visiting his wife. Collins said he was given permission to see her for a night, but team officials said they had not heard from him for three days. They then rather harshly cancelled his accreditation for the London 2012 Games. Collins, World 100m sprint champion in 2003, commented: "This is how it ends. It ends on a really sad note. I should have been allowed to run."
