Munich Cricket Club (MCC) will be celebrating its 30th anniversary on Saturday 21st July with a friendly game (1230 start) against its former captains.
The club was founded in 1982 and is one of the oldest cricket clubs in Germany.
Initial games were actually played on the vast open areas of the English Garden. A local rule back then meant that a batsman could not be given out if he had been distracted by one of the local 'maidens' who often 'inconveniently' disrobed behind the bowler's arm. Of course, nude sunbathing was and still is quite a popular pastime in Munich.
Apart from organising the first competition - the MCC Knockout Cup - and running the local league for the first few years, the club is a founder member of the Bavarian Cricket League and the German Cricket Association (DCB). It also played a formative role in the initial movements to set up the European Cricket Federation, which subsequently became the European Cricket Council, and operates under the auspices of the ICC Development Program.
Home games are played at the 'Hirschanger', arguably one of the most picturesque grounds in Germany, just a lofted off drive from the famous Chinese Tower beergarden. The ground is located in the south east corner of the English Garden, it's a ten minute walk north from Lehel U-Bahn station. Nearest tram stop is Paradiesstrasse opposite the ground - tram 17 direction Effnerplatz. More details can be found on the club website.

A split away against the powerful Regensburg Legionaires baseball club over the weekend by the Haar Disciples is starting to make believers of Haar and their chances of going far this season, especially after last season ended in turmoil.
In German baseball's 1. Bundesliga-South league, Haar were beaten 6-3 in a night game under the floodlights of the Regensburg stadium on Saturday. But Regensburg - the Bundesliga champions the last three years running - had to work hard for the win. Up until the seventh inning Haar were holding onto a slim 2-1 lead in a pitcher's duel between Disciple hurler...
In baseball lore the well-known nickname for a baseball park is the "Field of Dreams", but in Haar, they might start coining another term: "Fields of Dreams."
If anyone was asking before the season why the Disciples signed on US pitcher Brian Fields, they got a near-perfect answer on Saturday. In Haar's 1. Bundesliga-South game against the visiting Mannheim Tornados, the former Paderborn Untouchables hurler threw a no-hit game en route to a 2-0 win. Except for one walk he gave up, Fields would have had a perfect game.
Of the 27 outs in the 9-inning outing, Fields struck out 18 Tornados batters....
The Munich Cowboys good started was spoiled by penalties and missed chances as they fell to a 27-20 defeat against the visiting Rhein-Neckar Bandits, leaving their season record at 2-2.
With Bayern Munich's domestic cup final taking up the evening slot for sporting entertainment, the Munich Cowboys home venture against the visiting Rhein-Neckar Bandits looked an easy option for the afternoon. The incessant rain didn't help swing any undecided parties though and it made for both depleted numbers and a tricky afternoon on the football field.
With the Cowboys forced to accommodate some changes due...
Nico Rosberg has joined an elite club by winning the illustrious Monaco Grand Prix. It's the second race-win of his career, but it doesn't come as a surprise considering that Rosberg is a Monaco resident and is thus familiar with the track and the surroundings. Furthermore, he accomplished a unique feat in Formula 1, as he became the first son to win a race which was also won by his father. Keke Rosberg won the Monaco GP exactly 30 years ago.
Monaco is always a bit different to any other race in the season. It's a highlight for drivers and fans, but at the same time the racing on the track...
In an outcome which helped only one club - the league-leading Munich Caribes - the Gauting Indians and Ellwangen Elks played to a split on Saturday. In two tense contests, the hosts Gauting won the first one 2-0, but fell short as the visiting Elk narrowly held on to a 6-5 win in the second game.
The results - on a weekend when there was no other baseball in the Munich area - left Ellwangen with a won-lost record in the Regionalliga South-East of 7-5 and Gauting with 6-4. So the outcome did nothing to help either team try to close the gap with the Caribes who stand alone at the top of the...
Of late, Spain have been struggling to rediscover that "winning feeling" over Germany but Fernando Alonso provided that coveted feeling as he sped past Nico Rosberg and Sebastian Vettel to secure victory at the Circuit de Catalunya in Barcelona. Lotus driver Kimi Raikkonen saw the chequered flag in second, with Alonso's teammate Felipe Massa getting his first podium of the season with a third place finish.
In a race that was once again heavily dominated by tyre degradation and management, all the on-track action seemed to take place in the opening laps. Sebastian Vettel drew first blood, as he...
It's not often that sport gets the chance to surprise in the modern era but news from the Munich Cowboys camp has certainly done that. The disappointment surrounding the injury to regular quarterback Patrick Carey, who will be out for 4 weeks with a broken clavicle, has the potential to put the brakes on a promising start (2-2-1) for Coach Craig's team. Step forward former University of Georgia quarterback and now offensive coordinator of the Cowboys, Blake Barnes.
Barnes has been the man calling the shots on the sidelines so far for the Cowboys but has now chosen to don his cleats and pads in...
Score last weekend's regional baseball activity as follows: Weather 5 - Munich Teams 0.
After any number of washouts over the month of May, this past weekend it finally happened: All five Munich-area baseball clubs playing in German baseball's top three divisions saw their doubleheader fixtures fall victim to the rain and/or baseball fields made unplayable by the rain.
The washouts included the Haar Disciples 1st team's game in Stuttgart (1. Bundesliga South), the Haar Disciples 2nd team away against the Regensburg 2nd team, the Baldham Boars' home game against the Karlsruhe Cougars (both 2....
"If you had told me two years ago, that I would be here, playing professional football in Germany, I wouldn't have believed you." It's hard not to believe any young, American quarterback who suggests that NFL Europe was nothing more than a distraction from the bright, Friday-night lights of the regular NFL season. For Patrick Carey though, the NFL Europe was something he had seen on television as a youngster and, along with the help of some friends across the pond, his awareness of Europe's American football escapades turned into something quite special.
It's tempting to score last weekend's baseball results like this: Weather 4 - Munich Baseball 2.
The bad news for the Munich-area clubs playing in the top two divisions was that the 2nd-division teams Baldham Boars and Haar Disciples II had their total of four away games, respectively in Heidenheim and Karlsruhe, washed out by the rainy weather.
The good news was that at least the Haar Disciples' first team managed to squeeze in two games in the 1. Bundesliga South division at home on Saturday. They promptly won both of them against the newly-promoted Tübingen Hawks. So not only did Bayern...
Thanks - or rather, no thanks - to the local area's inclement weather at the weekend, three of Munich's suburban baseball teams had their games postponed, including a much-anticipated 2. Bundesliga-South "battle of the 'burbs" clash between Haar Disciples 2nd team and Baldham Boars. The Gauting Indians' home fixture against the Füssen Royal Bavarians in the Regionalliga Southeast likewise fell victim to the rain.
The other local Munich area teams - the Haar Disicples first team in the 1. Bundesliga South and the Munich Caribes in the Regionalliga Southeast - played away, with diametrically...
The Haar Disciples suffered their first defeat in the new Bundesliga-South season with a split against the Heidenheim Heideköpfe over the weekend. The word "split" seems to have vanished from the vocabulary of the Munich Caribes though. Two divisions lower in the Regionalliga Southeast, the Caribes swept up in their two home games against the Ellwangen Elks to boost their season record to 8-0.
In a bit of a paradox, the results of the first-division clubs were high-scoring affairs while the contests of the Caribes and Elks were low-scoring, nail-biting contests. Quite often, scores in the lower...
