Bamberg boxing bonanza

Bamberg will stage an exciting world title fight on September 15th as Troy Ross tries to capture Yoan Pablo Hernandez's cruiserweight belt.

Canadian Ross (25-2-0) has finally been given another chance to contest the IBF title when he challenges the Cuban Hernandez (26-1-0) for the belt in Franconia.

This will be a second opportunity for Ross to capture the belt, after a cut eye in the 5th round forced the referee to stop his first attempt in 2010 against the then champion Steve Cunningham. The cut came by way of a thumb into the eye which the referee didn't notice at the time so Cunningham, somewhat controversially claimed the vacant title.

Back in February this year, Ross was awarded a unanimous decision over Lukasz Rusiewicz in Frankfurt elevating him into the mandatory challengers position. He hasn't exactly kept busy though, by the time he walks into the ring at Bamberg he will have fought just once in 22 months.

In the same period, Hernandez has reaped the benefits of four pay days, capturing and defending the world title against the same top class opponent in Steve Cunningham as well as registering two knockout victories over Steve Herelius and Ali Ismailov along the way.

Hernandez is rated number one in the world in the cruiserweight division and while Ross is a mobile and powerful hitter, he is ten years older than the champion and could struggle for wind during the later rounds, should he make it that far.

Tickets for the battle between the two southpaws at the Stechert Arena in Bamberg can be purchased online via such sites as www.eventim.de or www.boxing-online.com

Klitschko is expected to comfortably deal with former sparring partner Francesco Pianeta on Saturday night. Photo: Tony Mayger
This Saturday night in Mannheim, world heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko will lay all his belts on the line when he takes on former sparring partner Francesco Pianeta.

Few will lay money on an upset, except maybe the challengers' close family and most loyal of friends. As the great Muhammed Ali used to say, he has two chances of beating him - slim and none.

Italian-born southpaw Pianeta grew up in Gelsenkirchen after his family moved there when he was six years old. He is unbeaten in 29 professional fights with the only smudge on his record being a draw with Albert Sosnowski back in...

Cruel Britannia

Krasniqi has ever reason to believe he can upset the odds. Photo: Tony Mayger
Cancellation hard to stomach as Cleverly sick again.

He has dealt with disappointment before but this time it's really angered him. With less than two weeks to go before a career defining world title fight with world champion Nathan Cleverly, Munich's Robin Krasniqi must now carefully re-plan his training after the fight was put back by 5 weeks to April 20th after the two headline acts suffered illness.

His showdown with Nathan Cleverly for the WBO world light-heavyweight title was originally made for The Royal Albert Hall in spring 2012. Cleverly pulled out of that match after picking up a...

Munich Boxer gets World Title Shot

Krasniqi has a shot at the big time. Photo: Tony Mayger
Munich's own Robin Krasniqi has finally got the world title shot he has dreamed about for so long. Originally arranged for last April, WBO world light heavyweight champion Nathan Cleverly pulled out citing a virus infection as the reason he was unable to prepare in time.

The WBO sanctioned Cleverly's last outing against unranked Shawn Hawk in the United States on condition that he face his mandatory challenger within 90 days. Cleverly stopped Hawk and cannot run or take 'easy' fights any longer. Purse bids were submitted in Budpest on Wednesday by Frank Warren and SES-Boxing, who promote the...

Brähmer Stays on Course for Cleverly Clash

Deontay Wilder finished Audley Harrison off early with his devastating punch power. Photo: Tony Mayger
For the second weekend in a row, boxing fans were treated to a bumper night of action with plenty of leather and gold laid on the line. Perhaps the pick of the night was Danny Garcia's (26-0) successful defence of his WBA & WBC light welterweight belts in his defeat of former IBF champion Zab Judah (42-8). After dominating the first six rounds and knocking Judah to the canvas in the eighth, Garcia was wobbled by the challenger in the later rounds. The champ kept his focus though, and won a unanimous decision over an expereinced campaigner who dug deep just to stay in the fight to hear the...

Krasniqi Outpointed by Cleverly

Krasniqi has work to do but is still young enough to get another world title chance. Photo: Tony Mayger

Despite a valiant effort from Munich´s Robin Krasniqi, his dream of becoming a world champion ended in disappointment after a wide points defeat to Welshman Nathan Cleverly in London last night.

It looked like it would be a short night's work for the champion when he caught Krasniqi with a right hook to the side of the face in the opening round, dazing the challenger momentarily. However, Krasniqi regained composure very quickly and went on to complete the full 12 rounds, losing a unanimous decision by just about the widest possible margin. Two of the judges scored all rounds in Cleverly's...

It was a good night of boxing action at the Kuppelsaal Congress Centrum in Hannover as the German Eagles delighted the packed arena with a comprehensive victory against the visiting British Lionhearts in Group B. 2008 Olympic bronze medallist Veaceslav Gojan, former AIBA Youth World Champion, Artur Bril and German World Series of Boxing (WSB) newcomer Emir Ahmatovic were the stars of the show in a match to remember for the home team.

It was very even in the opening two rounds of the Bantamweight (50-54kg) contest between the Eagles' 29-year-old...

Dolce & Gabbana Italia Thunder were too strong for German Eagles at the EWS Arena in Goppingen, recording a very important away victory to reclaim second place in the tough Group B. Despite an early set-back for the visitors, Branimir Stankovic, William McLaughlin and Vitalijus Subacius came up with the goods to give the Italian team a vital win. German Eagles on the other hand will now need to come up with some big results in the forthcoming matches if they hope to qualify for the World Series of Boxing (WSB) quarter-finals.

Krasniqi: I've Worked For This

Nathan Cleverly has been ordered by the WBO to defend his world title against their mandatory challenger or be stripped of his belt.

In pole position in the WBO ranking list to meet Cleverly is Kosovan-born Robin Krasniqi who now resides in Munich in Germany. It's the second attempt to get these two 25-year old light heavyweights in the ring after Cleverly pulled out of the bout originally scheduled for last April because of illness. At that time Krasniqi was ranked number four in the WBO rankings and got offered the opportunity to fight for the world title because the higher ranked fighters...

Abraham Dispenses the Mehdi-cation

'The King' remains on his throne. Photo: Tony Mayger
WBO super middleweight world champion 'King' Arthur Abraham retained his title on Saturday night in Nuremberg with an eighth round stoppage win over tough Frenchman Mehdi Bouadla.

With blood making its way into his right eye from a cut on the eye-lid, Bouadla was unable to continue with full sight and so it was left to referee Mark Nelson to wave off the bout and hand Abraham his first successful defence of the title he won in August.

Many had written Bouadla off as a tame opponent that Abraham would make light work of. In fairness though, the Frenchman put in a spirited performance and actually...
