Bamberg boxing bonanza
Bamberg will stage an exciting world title fight on September 15th as Troy Ross tries to capture Yoan Pablo Hernandez's cruiserweight belt.
Canadian Ross (25-2-0) has finally been given another chance to contest the IBF title when he challenges the Cuban Hernandez (26-1-0) for the belt in Franconia.
This will be a second opportunity for Ross to capture the belt, after a cut eye in the 5th round forced the referee to stop his first attempt in 2010 against the then champion Steve Cunningham. The cut came by way of a thumb into the eye which the referee didn't notice at the time so Cunningham, somewhat controversially claimed the vacant title.
Back in February this year, Ross was awarded a unanimous decision over Lukasz Rusiewicz in Frankfurt elevating him into the mandatory challengers position. He hasn't exactly kept busy though, by the time he walks into the ring at Bamberg he will have fought just once in 22 months.
In the same period, Hernandez has reaped the benefits of four pay days, capturing and defending the world title against the same top class opponent in Steve Cunningham as well as registering two knockout victories over Steve Herelius and Ali Ismailov along the way.
Hernandez is rated number one in the world in the cruiserweight division and while Ross is a mobile and powerful hitter, he is ten years older than the champion and could struggle for wind during the later rounds, should he make it that far.
